Lost hiker rescued after 5-hour search in Berkshires

MOUNT WASHINGTON, Mass. — A lost hiker in the Berkshires was rescued Sunday morning after more than a five-hour search.

Just after 8 p.m. Saturday night, a Lee man reported to Massachusetts State Police that his 54-year-old wife was four hours late in returning from her hike around Plantain Pond in the town of Mount Washington.

State Police, K-9 units and a helicopter from the State Police Air Wing launched a search and rescue mission with help from the Berkshire Mountain Rescue volunteers.

For several hours, troopers and volunteers combed trails while the Air Wing searched from above.

The woman was found around 1:20 a.m. and she was able to walk out of the woods with two state troopers. She didn’t report any injuries but was evaluated by an EMS unit at the search command post.
