Holiday travel to peak Wednesday in Boston area, AAA says

BOSTON — With Christmas less than a week away, it will start to feel like everywhere you turn, there’s traffic. Shoppers are scrambling and people are on the move.

More than 100 million Americans are expected to traveling by plane, train or car this holiday season.

AAA says you will start seeing an increase in holiday traffic Wednesday, Dec. 19. They also said it is the worst day for travel in the Boston area, with trips taking about 3 1/2 times longer than normal.

Air travel is expected to be at its highest level in 15 years and more than 6.7-million Americans are expected to fly.

An estimated 2.45 million Massachusetts residents will be traveling for the holidays and Boston is predicted to have some of the longest peak travel delays in the country. Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. is the worst time to travel in Boston, according to AAA, and that’s when you’ll start to see a mix of commuters and holiday travelers.

And it’s only going to get worse as holiday travel peaks on Saturday. 'Tis the season for courteous driving and ample use of blinkers.
