Harvard Univ. Police investigating 'indecent assault' of female student

The Harvard University Police Department is investigating after a female undergraduate student reported she was "indecently assaulted" on campus, according to The Crimson.

The university's newspaper reported that the incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday while the woman was walking on Plympton Street, according to an email HUPD spokesperson Steven Catalano sent to Harvard affiliates.

The woman reported that two men approached her and called out to her -- one of them grabbing her and throwing her against a wall. She reported that the men kissed her and fondled her chest.

According to Catalano's email, the woman screamed and ran away, and was not able to provide a detailed description of the individuals involved in the incident.

The Crimson said Catalano urged Harvard affiliates to report suspicious activity and to travel in groups as well as utilize resources provided by the school such as the evening van service or taxi escorts.

"The Harvard University Police Department wants to remind students, faculty, and staff that we are located in an urban setting and share many of the crime and safety issues that exist in any city,” Catalano wrote in the email. “Community members should be vigilant while walking throughout campus and surrounding areas both during the day and at night and to take the appropriate precautions.”
