First MSP trooper sentenced to year of supervised release in overtime scandal

BOSTON — A former Massachusetts State Police trooper has been sentenced to a year of supervised release with three months of home detention.

Eric Chin, 46, is the first trooper to be sentenced for crimes involving the on-going overtime abuse scandal primarily perpetrated by members of the now-defunct Troop E. Chin was a trroper assigned to the E, which was responsible for enforcement along the Mass. Pike. In 2016, he earned more than $300,000, which included about $130,000 of overtime pay.

Chin was paid for overtime he didn't work and for at least one four-hour shift he didn't work at all, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Chin submitted fake citations to cover up for him not working shifts that had been paid out.

He admitted to collecting $7,125 for hours he didn't work.

So far, eight troopers have been charged and pleaded guilty in the investigation. Chin is the first to be sentenced.

The investigation has also revealed Troop E allegedly employed a ticket quota, which is illegal in Massachusetts.
