Dog dies in 3-alarm fire in Bolton

BOLTON, Mass. — A wood stove caused a 3-alarm fire at a farm house in Bolton that killed a dog, fire officials said.

Sky25 flew over the scene shortly after the fire broke out around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. No one else was home at the time.

Heavy smoke poured from the windows of the historic farm house on Sawyer Road.

Bolton Fire Chief Jeff Legendre told Boston 25 News it was a challenge to get water to the scene.

"First arriving crews (were) met with heavy fire heavy smoke conditions and we had to use majority of mutual aid companies to battle this fire, an older farm house," Legendre said.

Legendre said the property is out of the water district, which meant crews needed to shuttle water to the scene until they found a pond nearby.

The farm house is a residence but doubles as Shultz Farm during the summer.

"It is a working farm during the summer and supplies fruits and vegetables to the town, for sale," Legendre said.

The owner declined to go on camera, but said the house has been in the family for over 100 years. He said the fire won't affect the farm.

People were seen removing picture frames out of the damaged house on Tuesday.

"The building behind us, like I said, is an older farm house blue frame construction. There is a tenant on the back so there is an apartment on the back that was built on on the original farm house, so it did impose some challenges to the initial crews finding ways in to both sides of the structure," Legendre said.

He said the owners could salvage this home.

"Just seems to be some heat and smoke damage at this point," Legendre said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Several communities provided mutual aid.
