The drawbridge that crosses the Saugus River, carrying cars on Route 107 between Saugus and Lynn will remain closed through Monday evening.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the bridge malfunctioned Sunday evening around 5:30 p.m. and became stuck in the open position. A subsequent evaluation found an issue with the steel ropes used to operate the bridge.
MassDOT said Monday the bridge would be lowered by a crane by the evening hours, but would be evaluated so a plan for repairs could be devised.
Detours will be in place for cars and MBTA buses. Detour streets include Summer Street, Lincoln Avenue, Ballard Street and Boston Street.
MassDOT says it has been maintaining the bridge regularly and plans to replace the bridge are nearing the bid phase.
