A carbon monoxide alarm was found on the kitchen counter without batteries, according to the state fire marshal's office.

Investigators determined that the coal stove in the basement was the source of the carbon monoxide in the home. The man was working on repairs to the stove with the door open. The flue pipe was full of coal ash which prevented the stove from venting properly to the outside.

The names of the victims have not been released.
