Driver who crashed into Braintree building speaks exclusively to Boston 25 News

BRAINTREE, Mass. — Tense moments in Braintree when a driver lost control of his SUV and crashed into an empty apartment building at a busy intersection.

Boston 25 News spoke exclusively with the driver, Sean Moroney, moments after the crash around 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Commercial Street.

“I tried to apply my breaks and they went straight to the floor,” Moroney said. “So, I hit the pole on the island hoping it would slow me down and it didn’t.”

Moroney picked up speed, plowing through the island, completing avoiding any oncoming cars. He said he collided with the building at what felt like nearly 50-miles-an-hour.

“Not only is it a window, but it’s a four-foot drop once you’re in there,” Moroney said. “I went in and then hit the steel beam. The airbag didn’t go off.”

Fortunately, Moroney walked away from the scene with only minor wrist pain.

His mother lives just blocks away and came running when she got the call.

“It’s so crazy because I know this intersection and I’m so thankful no one else got hurt and he didn’t get hurt,” Laura Mulvey, Moroney’s mother, said.

Moroney said even police officers told him he’ lucky to be alive.

“You got to go play the lottery right now,” the officers joked.

Moroney said the space he crashed into is slated to be a restaurant.
