Houston police officer fatally shot, accused shooter charged with capital murder

A Houston police officer was shot and injured Saturday, officials said. 

HOUSTON — A Houston police officer was fatally shot Saturday, officials said.

Here are the latest updates:

Update 3:10 p.m. EST Dec. 8: Arturo Solis, the 25-year-old man accused of killing Houston police Sgt. Christopher Brewster on Saturday night, was charged with capital murder and is being held without bond, the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday.

A judge granted a request from Harris County District Attorney's Office prosecutors that Solis not be granted bail, citing the suspect's lengthy criminal record and the brazen manner of the shooting, the newspaper reported.

"This offense was committed in a cold cowardly manner, where the defendant shot [Brewster] without provocation of any kind," senior prosecutor Jim Leitner wrote. "The officer was shot without warning before he could even touch his own weapon."

In court Sunday, authorities said Brewster left his vehicle without his gun drawn and was trying to get Solis' attention by waving both hands, KTRK reported. Brewster was hit several times but managed to `radio a description of the suspect to other responding officers, the television station reported

Update 10:58 p.m. EDT Dec. 7: Houston police Sgt. Christopher Brewster, 32, was responding to a domestic abuse call when he was shot multiple times by Arturo Solis, KTRK reported.

Brewster, 25, found the couple walking along a street. He was shot at as soon as he got out of his patrol vehicle. He was able to draw his service weapon and call in a suspect description.

Brewster was promoted to sergeant nine months ago, KTRK reported.

Solis has a criminal history that includes charges of assault causing bodily injury, KTRK reported.

Update 9:35 p.m. EDT Dec. 7: The shooter was taken into custody shortly later about a block away, KTRK reported.

It is unclear what led to the shooting.

Original report: A Houston police officer was shot and injured Saturday, officials said.

The officer was taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The shooter is still on the loose.
