Berkley firefighters battling illegal burn on first day of open burning season

BERKLEY, Mass. — Firefighters in Berkley are trying to put out an illegal burn on Point Street Tuesday evening.

More than 5,500 gallons of water have been trucked into the scene.

Firefighters are asking people in the area to use caution.

Tuesday marked the first day of open burning season in Massachusetts. The season runs through May 1.

If open burning is allowed in your city or town, you must contact your local fire department to obtain an open burning permit in advance. Among the conditions of obtaining a permit, you must call the fire department on the day you wish to burn to obtain verbal permission.

Use caution on Point St. this evening as fire crews are working an illegal burn . So far they have brought in 5500 gals of water using Engine 3 and Tanker 1 .
