Athol High School open Wednesday following heating problems

ATHOL, Mass. — Students and staff at Athol High School were sent home early Tuesday because of heating problems.

Principal Mary Jane Rickson made an automated call to parents around 8:45 a.m. stating the building had no heat when she walked in, but the boiler was working. She estimated the building would reach normal temperatures within an hour.

She offered parents the choice to pick up their children because of the cold classrooms.

A follow up call made an hour later stated students were being dismissed at 10:55 a.m. because of continued heating problems.

One faculty member who spoke to Boston 25 News, but didn’t wanted to be identified, estimated the temperature throughout the whole building was hovering in the low 50s around 9:30 a.m.

Superintendent Darcy Fernandes told Boston 25 News the school will be open on Wednesday.
