A reminder to clear the deadly danger on top of your car

CONCORD, N.H. — It's that time of the year -- and a good reminder as we prepare for another snowfall -- to clean your car roofs.

One New Hampshire man takes the reminder as a personal mission after he was nearly killed by a chunk of ice that came crashing through his windshield.

Bill Taylor was on his way home last winter from his New Hampshire Department of Transportation job when he was hit by ice from another truck.

"He hit a bump and a piece of ice broke free about the size of a shoebox and launched through the air," he said. "I ducked my head on purpose to take it on the forehead."

He needed more than a dozen stitches for the gash on his forehead.

He said he's thankful he wore his safety glasses.

"If I hadn't had safety glasses on, I probably would've lost my eye," he said. "They were taking bits of glass out of my face."

Law enforcement isn't taking any chances. On a December day, Boston 25 followed as a driver was pulled over for what troopers described as an iceberg on top of his roof. State police lent their scraper, so he could clean it immediately.

For Bill, it was along Route 101 where he and the truck involved pulled over but when the ambulance came, the truck driver took off. He turned himself in to police the next day.

"It could happen to you," Taylor said.

As another winter rolls around, he says it's a good reminder to keep an ice scraper, especially with an extension, to clear off your roof.
