8-year-old rescued from Newton pool by lifeguards

NEWTON, Mass. — An 8-year-old boy was rescued by lifeguards after nearly drowning in Newton Tuesday afternoon, according to the fire department.

The child was at the Fessenden School participating in a summer sports camp when he was pulled from the pool. The lifeguards performed CPR and were assisted by firefighters.

Boston 25 News has learned the child was conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital.

In a letter to parents, the summer camp director said, "I want to make you aware that there was an incident at one of our pools today. The lifeguards and aquatics staff, nurses, and all staff responded swiftly and appropriately. First responders were called. The parents of the child were contacted. They are with their child now who is resting comfortably."
