The 5 best movie musicals to binge-watch this weekend, in honor of 'Mamma Mia 2'

Here we go again.

The cast of "Mamma Mia!" is returning to theaters this weekend for another sparkly extravaganza, this time with Cher and Lily James, for "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again." It's exactly the splash of good clean summer fun you need in late July.

In honor of Pierce Brosnan attempting to sing once more, we rounded up five of our favorite movie musicals available to rent or stream this weekend. If they don't get you in the mood to sing along to Cher and "Fernando," we don't know what will.

If you want a goofy, star-studded, Grecian good time: 'Mamma Mia!'

There's a reason this jukebox musical from 2008 is getting a sequel a decade later. There are few movies that Hollywood has produced that are as joyful and downright fun as "Mamma Mia," the adaption of the the ABBA Broadway musical starring Brosnan, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski and a whole bunch of other faves. From the swinging, splashy ABBA soundtrack to the glittery costumes to beachside Greece, the film is simply a joy delivery system. We can't wait for the sequel.

Stream it on Netflix.

If you want the best of the best: 'Singin' in the Rain'

There's nothing quite like Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds tap dancing across your screen. The very pinnacle of the movie musical form, "Singin' in the Rain" utilizes its form better than any that have come before or after it, melding Broadway theatrical traditions with cinematic ones, plus a musical soundtrack you'll be happy to have stuck in your head.

Rent or buy it on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu or YouTube.

If you want all that jazz: 'Chicago'

The Oscar-winning adaptation of the vaudeville-style Broadway musical is the best musical film of the modern era. The film mixes things up by presenting its numbers as glitzy fantasy sequences. With unforgettable performances from Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah, "Chicago" is the kind of movie musical that can attract even the loudest naysayers.

Stream it on HBO Go/Now.

If you want a family classic: 'The Sound of Music'

How do you solve a problem like Maria? By watching Julie Andrews play her in "The Sound of Music," naturally. Forget the Carrie Underwood live version from NBC, the best way to relive the Von Trapp family saga is through the 1965 original, with its heartwarming story of love and persistence in the face of oncoming evil. Andrews' voice is unparalleled, Christopher Plummer is a heartbreaker and the Alpine scenery is something to behold. Please, Hollywood, resist your further remake urge with this classic.

Rent or buy it on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu or YouTube.

If you want something Disney: 'Mulan'

There are plenty of animated Disney classics to choose from, but if you're tired of watching "Frozen" over and over again, you should check out "Mulan" before it gets the live-action remake treatment. In addition to being a great story of a woman taking control of her destiny and sacrificing for her family, it also has some of the best songs from this era of Disney musicals, from "Reflection" to "Make a Man Out of You." The 1998 film just celebrated its 20th anniversary, so it's the perfect time to revisit.

Stream it on Netflix.
